What are the building regulations for fences on a corner allotment?

As far as VicSmart applications for front fences goes, fences on corners must meet the building regulations as a part of the planning application.

Fences on a corner allotment must respond to safety in relation to vehicle sightlines and pedestrians.

A fence is subject to compliance with building regulation 427 which requires a maximum height of 1.0m within 9m of a point of intersection of street alignments on corner allotments. The point of intersection is where the property boundary meets the road reserve. A building permit is required for a fence exceeding 1.0m – or what’s known as consent and report from the relevant council Municipal Building Surveyor for a higher fence.

If your proposal is for a front fence on a corner allotment and you are unsure, you may need to check with a Building Surveyor to confirm that our proposal complies with the relevant building regulations.
