What is a vacant lot?

A vacant lot is one where there are no part of buildings or other structures permanently fixed to land.

Local policy usually reflects a preference for subdivisions where development is approved, rather than those that create vacant land. The objective and requirements of Standard C8 relate to future development on Vacant land, to ensure the land can be developed. Where the realignment of a common boundary creates a vacant lot, the process takes longer than when a development is approved for the vacant lot.

This preference means that neighbouring residents and Council have a clearer idea of the future development of vacant land.
